CALIBA Poetry Project

This Wandering State: Poems from Alta is an original anthology of San Francisco Poets - It is an ode to the city, its life, poetry, and its independent bookstores. devorah major, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Jack Hirschman, Kim Shuck, Christine No, and Ruth Asawa are among the forty-one poets and artists included in this collection.

It is the first in a series of books planned through CALIBA’s Poetry Project, the brainchild of Calvin Crosby, artist, former CALIBA Executive Director and co-owner of King’s English Bookshop, and artist, activist, and poet Kim Shuck, the 7th Poet Laureate of San Francisco. The series of region-by-region poetry collections is intended to give voice to the diverse lives and perspectives of people who call California home.

The profits from the sale of this and future anthologies will be used to fund CALIBA programming, education, and scholarships for booksellers.

Anthologies are as tricky as definitions. Is this a complete anthology of San Francisco poetry? No. There are no complete anthologies. Projects start and hopefully end and the choices pass through one or more opinions making any such creation very personal. Excellence in poetry is subjective, curatorial decisions are also subjective. This anthology is intended as a family portrait not a greatest hits album. This is intended as the first of a series of California anthologies which explore a variety of perspectives and experiences. Thank you for joining us in this. ~ Kim Shuck 2022
