ABA RESOURCES FOR

CURATION CHALLENGES

As many of you know, there has been a rise of "curation challenges" at CALIBA bookstores and across the United States. If you are experiencing a book challenge of any kind, please email Hannah and Philomenia Polefrone (ABA).

How to Deal with Curation Protests

CALIBA OFFICE HAPPENINGS

While you have all been hard at work connecting readers with their next favorite books, the CALIBA staff has been pushing forward on a few projects.

Golden Poppy Logo

First, the Golden Poppy Committees have all submitted their finalist lists and the staff has started promoting it! Click here to view the 2024 Golden Poppy Award Finalists. For those of you signed up for the free Shelf Awareness emails, the finalist email will go out December 3rd. Make sure you’re looking for a draft to approve in your inbox! Voting for the winners will take place January 5th-15th

The Virtual Golden Poppy Awards will take place on January 30th at 7 PM PST. Mark your calendars and register for the event now. We hope you also invite your customers to help us celebrate the winners. If you plan to have a watch-party at your store, please let us know!

Thank you to all the committee members for their hard work and dedication. We’ve got another great group of finalists to celebrate! If you would like to be part of a committee next year, please fill out this interest form

Along with the Golden Poppy Award Finalists, we are happy to be launching CALIBA merch! We’ve designed a vinyl sticker and an enamel pin using the beautiful Golden Poppy art Obi Kaufmann created for us. Both of these items were designed with the intent of you reselling them in-store! The money CALIBA makes from the purchase of these items will first go towards the Glenn Goldman Scholarship and second to helping us fund CALIBA programs. All bookstores can partake in our merch! The vinyl sticker is available in the Golden Poppy order form. The pin will be added once it ships to us.

Website Under Construction

Next, if you came to the CALIBA Annual Meeting at Fall Fest, you may have heard that we are moving to a new membership platform! Novi will provide a more user-friendly experience for our members. We hope to launch our new website early next year, in time for NorCal Spring Forum registration.

CALIBA Bookseller Committees

Finally, moving into 2025 we would like to revamp and revitalize our committees. CALIBA is only as strong as our membership’s participation and being a part of a committee is one of the best ways to support CALIBA and help create a stronger organization. We will continue to have the interest form available for people to fill out through the New Year. Thank you to those who have already expressed interest, you will hear from us shortly. Click here to learn more about CALIBA committees.

Alongside the committees, we have the new Advisory Council, also launched at Fall Fest this year. The Council is a group of booksellers representing a variety of models, sizes, and regions that meet virtually four times a year for the purpose of providing the Office and the Board with feedback on the issues they are facing, and suggestions for CALIBA education, programming, and projects. We have a fantastic core group of booksellers from across the state already on the council but we are looking to fill three more seats. If you are interested, reach out to Hannah.

The CALIBA staff sincerely wishes you a happy and fruitful holiday season.
